Robert Ray Smith, 84, passed away on February 17, 2026 at Lee Health and Rehabilitation.

Robert was born on December 13, 1941, to the late Bill and Nora Smith. Robert spent his years working in the coal mines after proudly serving his country in the U.S. Army.

Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Taylor, Vernon, Arnold, Curtis, and Cecil Smith; sisters, Effie Eldridge, Reba Smith, Hazel Herron, and Lola Smith; step brothers, Florence Smith and Bill Joy.

Those left to cherish his memory is his daughters, Julie Smith and Sandy Smith; son, Robbie Smith; special friend, Bill Smith; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at Pennington Gap Funeral Home. A service will follow at 11:00 am with Pastor Roy Webb officiating.

Military honors provided by American Legion Hammond Post 3/265 will be held following the funeral at 2:00 pm at Mountain Home National Cemetery, 53 Memorial Avenue, Johnson City, TN 37684. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery by 1:45pm. Due to the distance of the drive a formal procession will not be accompanied.
