Nellie Oliver Leister, 82, departed this life for her heavenly home on Monday, May, 18, 2026.
Nellie was born on April 1, 1944, in St. Charles, VA, to the late Wheeler and Mary Oliver. She was three of six children. Shortly after graduating from St. Charles High School as salutatorian of her class, Nellie moved to Sykesville, MD, where she trained to become a registered nurse. For forty-five years, Nellie worked caring for the patients of Springfield State Hospital, a Regional psychiatric hospital. Nellie met her husband Donald after attending church in Catonsville, MD, and resided there for much of her life.
Nellie will always be remembered for her kind, loving, and generous spirit. She was a caretaker at heart, a true and devoted servant of God, always putting others before herself. She also had a deep devotion and love for animals, which reflected in her spoiling many of her pets over the years.
Nellie was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Leister; her parents, Wheeler and Mary Oliver; two sisters, Doris Oliver Poteet and Carlos Oliver; three brothers, William Oliver, James Oliver, and Denver Oliver; and her beloved grandmother, Elizabeth Oliver Kirk.
Those left to cherish her memory are her niece, Nicole Gordon; her great-nephews, Tyler Gordon and Ethan Gordon; and special friends who became family, Duane and Barbie Weber of Catonsville, MD.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 21, 2026, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at Jones-Pennington Gap Funeral Home. A funeral Service will follow with Pastor Shane Stewart officiating. A committal service will follow at Red Hill cemetery. Tyler Gordon, Ethan Gordon, Thomas Ely, and Presley Tipton will serve as pallbearers.
Nellie Oliver Leister and her family are in the care of Jones-Pennington Gap Funeral Home.
