Obituary
Nell Stewart of Pennington Gap, VA, a much loved and active member of our community, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 4, 2023 and Lee Health & Rehab in Pennington Gap, VA. Nell was born in Arno, VA and lived her younger life in Harlan Co. KY before moving permanently to Lee Co. in 1960. She married Sgt LJ Stewart in 1944. They had 3 children; James David Stewart, Gregory Ray Stewart, and Carol Estelle Stewart Herron. Nell later went to serve the county in the capacity of Lee Countys Planning Commissions Board of Directors for 8 years. And St. Charles Health Clinics Board of Directors for 20 years and the board of directors for the St. Charles Water Authority and the Pocahontas Lodge Morning Star for 5 years. She was employed by the Lee County school system and project Head Start for 18 years as a parent co-coordinator for follow through program. Nell was an established poet, winning several contest and awards, with some of her work being published in Dance on the Horizon, in the National Library of Poetry. She was a nominated poet of the year in 2005 by a committee in Washington D.C. as well as writing several poems for local businesses, friends and family. Nell lived her life helping others and spreading the word of love of Jesus Christ. Nell was a member of the First Baptist Church of St. Charles, VA and a later member of Belchers Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Pennington Gap, VA.
Nell was preceded in death by her husband Sgt. LJ Stewart and one son James David Stewart, by her parents Isom T and Betty Smith and 2 brothers, William and Earl Smith and 2 sisters, Maude and Estelle Smith.
She is survived by 2 children, Gregory Stewart of Ben Hur, VA and her special daughter in-law Brenda, and Carol Herron and husband Ron "Pinky" Herron of Keokee, VA. 5 grandchildren; Brian Stewart of Appalachia, VA, Shannon Ervin of Atlanta, GA, Misty Capps of Pennington Gap, VA, Blake Stewart of Kentucky and Jaclyn Herron also of Pennington Gap,VA She has 12 great grandchildren; Meghan, Brooke, Huxley, Jake, Alyssa, Shelby, Abby, Logan, Liam and Lydia, Alex and Eli. 4 great great grandchildren; Bennett, Briggs and Audrey and sweet baby Nora Jay, who will be arriving very soon this month.
