Obituary

Michael Vernoy Lane, 68, passed away peacefully at his home in Nickelsville, Virginia, on July 20, 2026.

Born on May 28, 1958, Mike was the son of the late Vernoy Lane and Loretta Lane Joplin. He was also preceded in death by his stepfather, the late Marion Joplin.

Mike is survived by his wife, Brenda Graham Lane; daughters, Whitney Lane Berry and her husband, Zachary, and Katie Beth Lane Warner and her husband, Keith; stepchildren, Graham Clouse and wife, Hollie, Ashton Clouse, and Cassie Johnson; grandchildren, Emery Kate, Hudson, and Lane Berry, and Harris Warner; step-grandchildren, Hadley and Brooks Clouse; brother, Timothy Lane; and half-siblings, Kathryn Ball, Edith Dove, Danny Lane, and the late Allen Lane.

Mike was a proud dad, Pap, and loving husband. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Nickelsville for 46 years. He graduated from Twin Springs High School, where he was a multi-sport athlete. He attended Clinch Valley College, where he played baseball, before graduating from Appalachian State University. He later earned his master's degree from Tusculum University.

Mike dedicated 41 years to Scott County Public Schools, where he served as a teacher, coach, and assistant principal before spending the last 18 years of his career as principal of Twin Springs High School, Nickelsville Elementary School, and Gate City High School. During his career, he coached football, basketball, volleyball, and track. He also served on the Virginia High School League Executive Committee, including a term as chairman. Throughout his career in education, Mike touched the lives of many students and made a lasting impact on the school communities he served.

Mike spent his life farming his Virginia Century Farm, where he raised registered cattle and farmed hay and tobacco. Farming was one of his greatest joys, and his work ethic was admired by many.
