September 16, 1936 – February 26, 2026
Joann Horton, 89, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 26, 2026, at Lee Health and Rehabilitation.
Joann was born on September 16, 1936, to the late Lyndsey and Myrtle Burchett in Virginia. She was a lifetime member of Lone Branch Baptist Church in Jonesville. Joann spent more than 30 years between teaching head start and in the Lee County School system before retiring in 2002. Joann's favorite things were gardening, taking care of the farm, she was known for her beautiful flowers, and helping her family with the cattle. She also enjoyed taking care of the birds around her home and the farm, especially the humming birds. Her greatest joys in life were her church and her grandchildren and her great grandchildren. Joann was a loving mother, caring grandmother, wonderful aunt, and cherished friend.
Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Earl Horton; brothers, Charles, Paul, Don, Earl, and Lynn Burchett; sister, Ruby Myers; grandchild, Jeremy Horton (Telitha).
Those left to cherish her memory is her son, Ronnie Horton and special daughter in law, Helena Horton; sister, Nancy Kate Horton; grandchildren, Stephanie Pennington (Brad) and Kennedy Belcher (C.J.); great grandchildren, Calem, Austin, Warner, Leona, Lane, Ethan, and Shelby; special nieces, Marietta, Becky, and Betty; special friends, Debbie Burchett, Opal Wilder, and Audrey Pennington.
The family will receive friends on Monday, March 2, 2026, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Powell Valley Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 7:00 pm with Pastor Marvin Matlock officiating.
A committal service will be held the following day, Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at Horton Family Cemetery at 11:00 am. Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home by 10:15 am to go in procession. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
