Obituary James Marvin Bartley age 98 of Ben Hur, VA was born May 28, 1924 in Dryden, VA and passed away November 28, 2022 at Lee Health and Rehab in Pennington Gap, VA. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years Jean Bartley, parents Nicholas Rhea and Virgie Bartley, sisters Ruth Bledsoe, Helen Kirk, and Ethel White, brothers Garland Bartley, Conrad Bartley and Gilmer Bartley. Mr. Bartley built Bartleys Fruit Market in Pennington Gap, VA and spent 47 years operating it with his wife, Jean. Prior to operating their produce market, Mr. Bartley hauled produce for several years where he would wholesale to various stores. His long tenure with the produce market granted him a long list of friends and acquaintances. He was also employed by Pet Dairy, where he drove an ice cream truck. He even hauled coal for a few years. After retiring from his long run at the produce market, he helped install carpet for six years. Mr. Bartley retired a second time on April 15, 2020 as the countys oldest employee. He operated the County Convenience Center in Ben Hur from 2006 to 2020. Mr. Bartley was a lifetime member of Miles Masonic Lodge #165 and he attended St. Charles First Baptist Church and was the oldest member. He was also an avid bird hunter, fisherman and gardener. He is survived by one son Johnny Bartley of the home, one daughter Susan Bartley Widener of Ben Hur, VA, sisters Oma Lee Beverley of Kingsport, TN, Joanne Wilson of Kingsport, TN, Margaret Martin of Indianapolis, IN and Doris Crawford of North Carolina. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, other family and friends. Visitation will be from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM Thursday, December 1, 2022 at Province Funeral Home in Pennington Gap, VA. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM Thursday with Paul Davis, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Lee Memorial Gardens in Woodway, VA. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to St. Charles First Baptist Church, (Building Fund) 188 Big Branch Road, St. Charles, VA 24282.
