Helen Howard, age 96 of Dryden, VA passed away in NHC Nursing Home in Johnson City, TN Sunday, March 19, 2017. She was a graduate of Hiawassee College where she was an outstanding basketball player. She later graduated from Lincoln Memorial University. She taught school and coached girls basketball. One of the schools she coached was Keokee High School having won 59 straight games and 4 tournament championships. She loved the outdoors, was a sharp shooter and an avid gardener who grew vegetables for her neighbors. She had a passion for animals and had a great variety of pets from baby squirrels , pet crows to her beloved Chico. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother J.J. Howard, 3 nephews Bill, Jim and Paul Howard. She leaves to mourn her passing 2 nieces, Susie Baker and Betty Flanary and nephew Bob Howard plus a number of nieces and nephews and good friends Dick and Margaret Olinger. A graveside service will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at the Powell Valley Cemetery in Dryden, VA with Rev. Ray Bowlin officiating. Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:30 AM Tuesday to go to the cemetery.
