Dolores E. Sonntag, 86, of Pennington Gap, VA passed away on December 15, 2017 after bravely battling a long illness. She was born on June 20, 1931 in Newark, NJ. She was retired from working at a toy factory in New Jersey. Dolores loved to garden, draw and play with her grandchildren. She always had a smile and a kind word for anyone she met. Her favorite saying was ' The first one-hundred years are the hardest.' She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Rose Roldan; her brothers, Henry Roldan, Jr and Raymond Roldan; her sister, Rose Brownlee; her first husband, William Avery and granddaughter Anita Avery. She is survived by her husband, Walter Sonntag of Pennington Gap, VA; her sons, William H. Avery, Sr and wife Julianne of Pennington Gap, VA; Richard Avery of Newport, NC and Steven Avery and wife Rita of Rahway, NJ; her daughter, Diane Popick and husband Robert of Trentwoods, NC; her sisters, Marlene Roldan of Titusville, FL and Carolyn Ganska of Toms River, NJ; her brother, Pedro Roldan and wife Wilma of Toms River, NJ. She was blessed with 15 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Dolores was lovingly known as 'Nanny' to so many everywhere. Visitation will be held Tuesday, December 19, 2017 from 2:00 until 4:00 PM and also 6:00 PM and will conclude with a Rosary beginning at 7:30 PM with Father Tim Drake officiating. A graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at Lee Memorial Gardens in Woodway, VA. Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 12 noon Wednesday to go to the cemetery. Family will serve as pallbearers.
