Obituary

Billy Ray Haynes, 87, passed away peacefully on May 6, 2026 at his home in Pennington Gap, Virginia.

He was born on September 5, 1938, Billy lived a life marked by service, hard work, and devotion to his family and community.

Billy proudly served his country in the United States Navy aboard the USS Wadleigh DD-689 for six years. Following his military service, he dedicated 13 years as a reserve officer with the Lee County Sheriff’s Department. He was also self-employed for many years, known for his strong work ethic and willingness to help others whenever needed.

Billy was preceded in death by his parents, Gladys and Emer Haynes; his brothers, Bobby Haynes, Ronnie Woodard, Jesse Woodard, Wayne Woodard, and Eddie Woodard; and his sisters, Gaye Roberts, Shirley Berry, Joann Musick, and Sue Woodard.

He is survived by his loving wife, Doris Thompson Bledsoe Haynes; his son, Kevin Haynes; and his brother, Gary (Susan) Woodard. Billy also leaves behind many cousins, nieces, and nephews who will cherish his memory.

Billy will be remembered for his dedication to family, his years of public service, and the kindness and strength he showed throughout his life. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, May 10, 2026, from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm at Pennington Gap Funeral Home. A service will follow with Richard Thompson officiating. Full Honors will be provided by the Lee County Sheriff's Department Honor Team.

The committal service will follow at 2:00 pm at Lee Memorial Gardens in Woodway, Virginia.
