Obituary

Bill Bishop age 87, of the Woodway Community, passed away Monday Morning, October 2, 2023 while at the Johnson City Medical Center.

Bill was born in Stickleyville, VA on Wednesday, July 15, 1936 a son of the late Ray and Eliza (Clark) Bishop. he joined the Army on October 29, 1949 at the age of 13 and was released in 1950 when his young age was reveled. Once he turned 18, he re-enlisted with the Air Force where he served for 5 years. He was the Owner/Operator of Bishop Construction Company for 45 years, served as the Lee County Building inspector and also a deputy with the Lee County Sheriffs Office. He also served as the Chief of the Woodway Volunteer Fire Department and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans. In his leisure time, he enjoyed working on vehicles and playing bingo. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Pennington Gap.

Preceded in death by parents, he is also preceded by his wife: Maureen (Barker) Bishop, 6 brothers: A.V., Chig, J.D., O. T., R. C. and Tom. 3 sisters: Helen Rasnic, Justine Rasnic and Lucille Crabtree.

He is survived by his son, Billy Bishop of Woodway and daughter, Barbara Pennington and husband Dan of Ben Hur, VA. Grandchildren: Angie Cecil, Danny Pennington, Jason Pennington and Autumn Bishop. 7 great-grandchildren. 1 sister: Jolene Dingus of Jonesville, VA Several nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members and a host of friends also survive.

Graveside committal services will be conducted at 3:00 PM Thursday afternoon, October 5, 2023 at the Lee Memorial Gardens with Bob Richards, Pastor of First Christian Church of Pennington Gap officiating. It is requested that family and friends meet at the cemetery at 2:50 PM for the graveside service. A Military Flag presentation and Taps will be observed by members of the Virginia National Guard during the graveside.
